A healing on the Sabbath becomes a confrontation over who Jesus claims to be. When religious leaders challenge His actions, His answer raises the stakes: He is doing His Father’s work. Those listening must reckon with His relationship to God—and what that means for them.

In John 5:16–30, Jesus declares His authority to give life and judge, acting in perfect unity with the Father. His words bring us face to face with the promise of eternal life for those who hear Him and believe the One who sent Him. Join us as we consider His claims and respond to His invitation.

Big Idea: Because Jesus is equal with the Father, the giver of life, and the final judge, every person must decide whether to believe and follow Him.

Overview

The message opened with the true story of Dr. Boris Kornfeld, a Russian Jewish prisoner who met Christ in a Soviet gulag and shared his new-found faith with a cancer patient—Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Kornfeld was murdered that same night, yet Solzhenitsyn was transformed, later becoming a Nobel laureate and a powerful Christian witness. Their story illustrates that the claims of Jesus are not decorative slogans; they change lives.

Turning to John 5:16-30, Pastor Tim showed how Jesus, in a face-to-face clash with Jewish leaders, made three breathtaking declarations. These “audacious claims” explain why the authorities sought His death and why modern listeners must reckon with Him today. Each claim reveals Jesus’ divine identity and sets the terms of our eternal destiny.

• “My Father is always at work… and I too am working.”

• First-century Jews rarely called God “my Father”; Jesus’ intimate language declared a unique oneness that the leaders understood as blasphemy.
• Their charge shifted from Sabbath-breaking to a resolve “even more” to kill Him.

2. Jesus claimed the power to give life (John 5:21, 24-26).

• “Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it.”
• Old-Testament texts (Deut 32:39; 1 Sam 2:6) insist that only God can confer life, so Jesus is asserting deity.
• Eternal life begins the moment a person hears and believes; some pinpoint the moment, others simply know they are spiritually alive—either way, life comes from Him alone.

3. Jesus claimed the authority to judge (John 5:22-23, 27-30).

• “The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.”
• A universal resurrection is coming: all in the graves will hear His voice—some to life, others to condemnation.
• Everyone falls into one of two categories; there is no grading on a curve.
• If Jesus’ claims are true, ignoring Him is eternally catastrophic; believing Him secures everlasting joy.

Application

The call: If Jesus really is God, the life-giver, and the final judge, the only rational response is to believe in Him today and live under His lordship.

Head — Acknowledge that Jesus’ three claims leave no room for seeing Him as merely a teacher; He is God Himself.

Heart — Rest in the assurance that the One who will judge you first shed His blood to save you.

1. Confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead.
2. Participate in the Lord’s Supper as an act of remembrance and surrender.
3. Live out a witness that, like Dr. Kornfeld’s, points others to the life only Christ can give.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are one with the Father, the giver of life, and the righteous Judge. We bow before Your majesty, thanking You that the Judge became our Savior. Awaken faith where there is doubt, renew assurance where there is fear, and empower us to live as courageous witnesses to Your truth. May our lives, like Dr. Kornfeld’s, point many to the life that is found only in You. Amen.
